Hi Lonnie,
For the crankcases to fill with gasoline, two things have to happen:
1. The fuel tap allows fuel to flow
2. The carb float needle allows fuel to flow

1. If the vacuum fuel tap is working correctly, fuel will only flow with the engine off with the tap in the prime position. You either left the tap at the prime position over winter or you have a faulty tap which allows fuel to flow with the engine not running.

2. Even if the fuel tap allows fuel to flow, the float in the carb should rise and the needle valve should cut off the fuel supply. For the crankcases to fill with fuel, you must have a faulty carb float mechanism. Your fault may be as simple as some dirt or some minor corrosion. Or the float height may be incorrectly set, allowing the fuel in the carb become high enough that it can run into the engine before the float needle can shut off the supply.

Whatever your problem, it's fairly simple and inexpensive. Leaving the choke on would not have caused any problems.

I hope this has been helpful,
Happy Savage riding,
Andrew
